Changes, Ep. 6

 Part 2

By Haya Barakat

That night, Phillipa attempted to wake up an already-awake Chloe Abril. By smacking a pillow onto her face, of all ways.

"Why-" Chloe started, turning abruptly to lay on her back on the bed. Phillipa was hovering over her with a stupid grin on her face and one of Rosa's many white throw pillows in her hand. "Did you really have to do that? I was already awake."

"But you were falling asleep," Phillipa pointed out, booping Chloe on the nose. Chloe waved her off and sat up.

"No, I wasn't. Are Sam and Rosa asleep?" Chloe asked, glancing at the door to the connected bathroom as if expecting the two college students to come busting in and demand why she and Phillipa were awake at twelve in the morning after specifically telling them to go to sleep before ten so they could take them out early the next morning.

"Yeah, they're asleep. Now." Phillipa sat cross-legged on the bed in front of Chloe, drumming her fingertips on her knees. "Superpowers."

Chloe sighed. "Fine," she grumbled. Phillipa brightened and straightened her posture.

"So..." Phillipa started, silent for a few seconds after. "Why do you think we have them?"

Chloe shook her head. "I don't know. I have no idea why we got them or how. Like you said, at Starbucks, I think we should grateful that we have them in the first place. Don't ask too many questions," she replied.

Phillipa nodded, biting the inside of her right cheek. "Yeah, but why haven't we talked about them?"

The room was silent for a bit. "What do you mean?" Chloe asked.

The blonde shrugged her shoulders. "I mean, we spent like three nights with each other talking about the most random things and planning for this trip, but we never talked about our powers. That's kind of the reason we became friends in the first place, and it's definitely not a normal thing."

Chloe hummed in response. "Yeah, definitely not." She looked up at her fellow shifter, whose little frown spread into a wide grin. "What?"

Phillipa snickered, making eye contact with Chloe. "We're built different."

Chloe froze. She wasn't sure whether to throw Phillipa out of the room and make her sleep on the couch or just lock her out of the apartment altogether.

She didn't do either. Instead, she burst out laughing, Phillipa following closely after. They laughed for a solid five minutes, completely forgetting they were supposed to keep quiet so as to not wake up their temporary flat mates. Chloe playfully shoved Phillipa's shoulder, laughing more in five minutes than she did in the last four and a half months since school started. "I hate you so much," she joked, which made Phillipa laugh harder.

After the two finally settled down, they lay in silence with the frequent giggle, neither able to keep the smiles off their faces. Chloe was grinning so hard it was hurting her face muscles.

Another few minutes of silent chuckles passed until Chloe spoke: "We were already built different."

Phillipa giggled again, lightly smacking Chloe's arm. Chloe turned to face Phillipa, who did the same.

"Are you glad you got these powers?" Phillipa asked, a sudden question Chloe wasn't expecting to hear, but the answer was easy.

Chloe nodded, slowly, as she focused her dark eyes on the ceiling. "Yeah." She couldn't think of anything else to say.
